On Thursday, 28 November 2024, the T4RAIL IT-SI project steering committee meeting was held at the headquarters of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) in Rome. SŽ-Tovorni promet is also participating in the project as one of the project partners.
The T4RAIL IT-SI project, launched in April 2024 and co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg VI-A Italia-Slovenia programme, aims to digitise rail transport communication in the border area between Italy and Slovenia. Its main objectives include promoting technological innovation and improving cross-border rail connections, which will have a positive impact on the competitiveness of local businesses and reduce the negative environmental impact of transport.
The project aims at carrying out the operational test of the Translate4rail tool to overcome language barriers in rail transport operations in the cross-border area between Italy and Slovenia. In this respect, the use of an automatic translator tool facilitates communication between the driver and the traffic controller through the exchange of messages in their own mother tongue.
The members of the Steering Committee steer and oversee the work of the project and during the meeting shared and discussed the progress of the project activities. After a formal introduction, the participants briefly introduced themselves to each other and then reported on milestones achieved and plans for future work. In this context, possible changes to the work plan were discussed in order to work more effectively and ensure the successful implementation of the project.
On Friday, November 29, the first technical workshop of the T4RAIL IT-SI project took place. Participants had the opportunity to learn about the technical aspects for the implementation of the project, including the prerequisites for the use of the communication equipment, the language package and the software development to date. The workshop focused on a live practical demonstration of how the translator tool works. In this context, the participants had the opportunity to try firsthand the software prototype simulating an operational communication through the use of the tablet. Afterwords, clarifications were provided and views on the development of the project were exchanged.
The project partnership includes the lead partner RFI, which manages the Italian railway infrastructure, and the Slovenian partner SŽ-Infrastruktura, which manages and maintains the railway infrastructure in Slovenia. The Italian partners are Rail Cargo Carrier Italy, InRail and the University of Trieste, while the Slovenian partners are Rail Cargo Slovenia, SŽ-Tovorni promet and the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport of the University of Ljubljana.
