At SŽ-Tovorni promet, we are committed to respecting the highest standards of environmental protection. Concern for the preservation of the environment is part of the code of ethics of the Slovenian Railways and represents an important part of social responsibility and sustainable development.
In pursuing the strategic goal of reducing CO2 emissions from the transport sector, we took an important step by purchasing electricity for traction, which is 100% obtained from renewable energy sources.
Our company uses green electricity to carry goods with all electric locomotives. On electrified lines, this enables us to transport cargo virtually carbon-free. We estimate that, as a result, our carbon footprint this year will be lower by around 83 percent compared to last year.
The latest statistic from the European Commission shows that rail transport accounts for only 0.4 percent of greenhouse gas emissions from transport. In Slovenia, 36 percent of all energy is used annually in the transport sector. Of the energy used in transport, 99 percent are fossil fuels.
According to the calculations of the European Environment Agency, a cargo train produces as much as fourteen times less CO2 per year than a road cargo vehicle. That is why we firmly believe that rail cargo transports are not only an indispensable part of the supply of the economy, but also the foundation of sustainable transport development.
